Mauri Kiribati!!
Mauri Kiribati!! We finally arrived here in Tarawa, Kiribati and could instantly feel the change in the climate...Kiribati is very hot!! Big change from chilly Fiji!! Dr. Ueantabo Mckenzie, USP Campus Director, Kiribati & Matana Anterea, who is the Program Assistant here in Kiribati were waiting for us at the Bonriki International Airport. After dropping off our bags at the lodge where we are staying, we then went off to the Campus. We met the staff here and Matana took us around the campus. We will surely be getting pics. to you on this.. and it was off to lunch with Uenatabo at a sleek Chinese restaraunt, bit of shopping of food supplies then it was back to the lodge. We are just so tired!! having had to wake up at 4am. So it was then off to a much needed rest at the lodge. more later of course...

Kiribati may not be everyone's idea of a holiday destination but its special because it reminds me of the Fiji that was where one does not necessarily need to lock up doors when going out and you can just easily have a conversation with passerbys. Its a relatively safe & peaceful place. The people are special. They are very hospitable and friendly. They have a vibrant culture as well with their dancing & art & crafts.
Kiribati is an atoll island country hence they have a problem with access to safe drinking water. On the main island Tarawa, there is a succession of supermarkets (big & small) where you can easily buy bottled water. Vegetables is scarce due to the low soil fertility but the supermarkets is very well stocked with canned food and most of the Chinese restaraunts also use fresh vegetables in their dishes. Electricity is not a problem on Tarawa island but if you plan to visit the outlying islands, basic infrastructure; safe drinking water, electricity is scarce.
There is only 1 flight per week (Thursdays) to Kiribati through Air Pacific where you will need to board at Nadi, Fiji.
I might also add that we were strongly advised not to swim in the sea due to the heavy pollution that occurs (Kiribati has a problem with waste disposal)
Kiribati, Tarawa esp. have quite a collection of WWII relics so that is probably one of the sights you can visit.
I would recommend that you stay at Fema's Lodge. (posting made below). The local hotel i.e. Otintaai Hotel is very much in need of repair. Fema Lodge is your safest bet for accomodation if you wish to visit.
If you don't mind a bit of adventure & living beyond your comfort zone then you should enjoy Kiribati.
